I'm a late 20-something year old South African turned Canadian Caucasian female. Teaching is my passion and I'm grateful that I've at least got that figured out. I love to travel and after graduation, when the job market for teachers in Vancouver was less than ideal, exporting my skills overseas was a no-brainer.

Japan was the obvious choice for me. Especially coming from such a "new" city, Vancouver, the long history of Japan fascinated me. The rich culture, so different from anything I had ever experienced, was also a factor pulling me, not to mention the kind and respectful nature of Japanese people, the known safety of the country, and the view of teaching as a truly worthy profession. Other perks included it being a well-paying job with government-backed minimum standards such as guaranteed health care, subsidized housing, and payment for my flight to and from the country. So, like I said, a no-brainer.

Durban and Vancouver will always hold special places in
my heart, and now after 2 years of living here, Miyazaki is growing on me too. Probably many of you have never heard of Miyazaki. I hadn't either! But it's a place I've grown to love.
